Even prior to our arrival and booking, Chris and Paula were always available (via ) to answer any questions about the And that kind of care and attention completely sums up the fantastic way in which Chris and Paula's accommodation is run when you're there: if you want someone to make recommendations or help their door is open but, likewise, if you just want a peaceful time relaxing and enjoying their fabulous gardens you will be completely at free to do so with no interference. Notes

Chris and Paula retired to the Charente from Dorset, England in 2000. We loved Les Chevilloux immediately. In summer the fields around us are filled with sunflowers and maize, and the Braconne forest, just an amble or cycle up the lane, is a delight to explore.

Our 18th century stone cottage or "gîte" makes a very comfortable holiday retreat and we have, over the years, ensured that it is fully equipped with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The 10 x 5 metre swimming pool is yours whenever you want it and is lit for those swims on balmy summer evenings. You also have free use of the village tennis courts.

Why here? It is simple. The pace here is as gentle as it was in rural Dorset. It is not too far to get to from the Channel - just 5 hours from Caen, yet far enough to feel "abroad" and enjoys a much better climate - the second sunniest region in France. Gastronomy is very important to the Charentais. This is home to the grape, melon, mussels, paté de foie gras and other duck and goose products, snails, and of course, Cognac.

On the threshold of the Dordogne and Vienne, Les Chevilloux is ideally placed for day trips to the coast, as well as the caves and grottoes of the Dordogne. However, there is plenty to see on the doorstep without going far. La Rochefoucauld; our local town is 7 minutes away and has all you may need for shopping, with LECLERC hypermarket, and little shops in town. There is a Saturday market there too. The imposing château is a must to visit. Angoulême, about 15 minutes drive, is a buzzing city with all types of restaurants. Built on ramparts, it hosts a famous classic car race every September when the city is normally filled with British enthusiasts who have driven their classic cars down for the weekend.

We love sharing Les Chevilloux with our guests, many of whom return again and again and we have become "their friends in France", as one couple put it. Whenever you come, we are here to ensure your complete satisfaction, whatever it takes. We want you to want to come again too! Paula is an enthusiastic and talented gardener and she has spent the last 19 years developing what was an "empty canvas". We share the gardens with woodpeckers, red squirrel and all types of other birds.

So, all you have to do is choose when you want to come - easy!
